Access for All: journeying through disability and nature, Bethany Handley

Bethany Handley

£5.00

11.30 at the Castle Hotel

Bethany Handley is an award-winning writer, poet and disability activist campaigning for access to nature for all. She was a keen hiker, climber and surfer before becoming paralysed, finding herself padlocked out of much of our countryside. Working at the intersection of climate justice and disabled people’s rights, Bethany believes that since we have created many of the barriers to accessing nature, we can also remove them.

She is an Ambassador for Country Living’s Access for All campaign, for Wales Coast Path and for Ramblers Cymru. Bethany was named one of the ten most influential disabled people working in politics, law and media in the UK, and one of the 100 most influential disabled individuals in the UK in the Shaw Trust’s Disability Power 100. She won Creative Future’s Gold Prize for Creative Non-fiction 2023, was a finalist in Nine Arches Press’ Primers 2023 and was shortlisted for the RSL Jerwood Poetry Prize 2024.

Her writing, poetry and/ or activism has been featured by BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Radio Wales, BBC One News, BBC Wales, Metro, and the Poetry Foundation amongst others, and published by magazines including POETRY, Poetry Wales, Buzz Magazine, The Welsh Agenda, Walk Magazine and Country Living. She edited Beyond/ Tu Hwnt: the Anthology of Welsh Deaf and Disabled Writers (Lucent Dreaming, Jan 2025). Cling Film, her debut poetry pamphlet, will be published by Seren in February 2025 and was named one of the 40 best books, films and events of 2025 by Country Living.
